H.'
Community Preservation Committee
Minutes
December 2, 2021
Ava Costello
Application: HVAC Unit for One -Room Schoolhouse: $19,680 (continued)
Last year 177 persons visited the schoolhouse. Installing a split HVAC system would make the
environment more comfortable in a climate -controlled setting during the summer months, and in
the fall with openings for school visits and on special dates such as Memorial Day, Veterans Day
and Indigenous Peoples Day.
The unit is proposed to blend into the wood beams on the back wall with piping to be contained
in a false ceiling to maintain the buildings historic appearance. The heat and air system would
operate only when the schoolhouse is in use for energy efficiency. It is anticipated the utility
costs would be assumed under the Archives building budget through the Town Manager's
Office.
The Mashpee One Room Schoolhouse is one of the few historic places in the Town of Mashpee
on the National Register list.
It was noted the Director of Public Works assisted in the project estimate. There is no bid
requirement since the project cost falls under $25,000. It is expected that DPW labor would
complete some of the work requirements. The remainder would be done under annual contract
by mechanical vendors. With CPA approval the project would be completed in July 2022.
The historic schoolhouse is exempt from ADA compliance and it is not wheelchair accessible.
It was suggested a temporary ramp be considered.
Application: Mashpee War Monument Project: $86,000
Ava Costello and Richard DeSorgher discussed additional funding requests to complete the
Mashpee War Monument. The project received $317,500 in CPA funding with $15,000 in MHC
grants. The additional funding request of $86,000 would be added to the $177,981.63 available
budget to purchase a solid granite monument with the Veteran names, conflicts and dedication
along with medallions depicting the Military branches and new Town Seal. Work includes
delivery and installation, an electrical and landscape budget as well as project contingency.
The goal of the project remains the same. To honor, recognize and pay tribute to all Veterans
from Mashpee to make sure their service and sacrifice to our country is made visible and never
forgotten.
With CPA funding construction of the monument would begin in the spring of 2022 with
completion in early summer, and a Town -wide dedication and celebration in the fall of 2022.
