4
Community Preservation Committee
Minutes
December 2, 2021
Catherine Laurent
Application: Multi -Purpose Track & Field Stadium Renovation: $1,709,400 (continued)
The goal of this project is to replace the track and multi -purpose field in the Stadium of the
Mashpee Middle/High School. The facilities are original to the school's construction in 1996.
The track was resurfaced approximately 13 years ago. The surface is defective extending into
the base and sub -base of the track. Complete reconstruction is necessary.
The School Committee is in consensus to replace the track and multi -purpose field and to
convert the fields from grass to synthetic turf. Natural turf has been difficult to maintain due to
high usage, and weather impacts. There has been an increase in field usage over the years as
well. In addition to the MMHS teams, the field is used for special events such as graduation, and
the Special Olympics. During the summer the track and field are used for community athletics,
numerous day camps and by the public.
Most towns have made the transition to synthetic turf. Improvements would allow the Town of
Mashpee to be on a level playing field with other school districts.
The $760,000 expenditure for the synthetic turf field would not be funded under the CPA
program.
Project costs under the CPA would support general contracting, site preparation, demolition,
concrete, the track, fencing, ADA compliant walkways and access, site amenities, utilities, site
improvements, LED stadium lighting and project contingency fees. Additional storage would be
provided for equipment and field maintenance equipment, the extension of a water services for
the concession building and a hydration station. New perimeter fencing would separate the track
and field.
The existing site amenities within the Stadium, the bleachers, press box, concession building,
storage building, athletic lighting and electronic scoreboards would not be improved.
With CPA and CIP approval, the project would go to bid in the early spring with construction to
commence in the summer of 2022. It is anticipated that a majority of work would be complete
prior to the onset of the new school year.
To remain within budget constraints a 20% contingency is budgeted for CPC and CIP project
expenditures. Any used funds would be returned to the coffers of the Community Preservation
Committee.
