i
;c a
Economic Overview: Job creation has not kept pace with the
growth of population. Mashpee' s per capita income has been in
decline over the past ten (or so) years. Mashpee also has
significant seasonal job fluxuations, which affects overall
income.
Economic Structure: The Town' s job base is small relative ,.
to population. Most Mashpee residents work outside of the Town;
most of the jobs in Mashpee are held by people from other towns.
Mashpee' s economy is very interdependent with other towns on the !
Cape and off-Cape economy. Mashpee' s economy is heavily weighted
toward retail jobs. The vast majority of manufacturing
jobs depended upon Augat, which is now closed. Finance,
insurance and real estate has been a significant source of growth
in the region and an important component of Mashpee' s economy. iuF
Key Findings: The physical environment in Mashpee poses
both an o pportunity. and a constraint to economic development.
Mashpee's environment attracts economic development. Certain 9:_
types of economic development are constrained by regulatory
processes necessary because of our sensitive environment.
Economic development is not defined by real estate development or
limited to improving the community' s tax base, but rather
improving living conditions and economic conditions for Mashpee
residents. Economic development initiatives need to be targeted
to the needs of unemployed and underemployed Mashpee residents. f.
The Mashpee Industrial Park represents the Town' s best site for
future industrial growth. The Economic Development Committee is
working closely with the Industrial Park and Cape Cod Commission Ili ,
on a pre-screening process and development agreement to simplify
permitting for businesses that move into the Park.
The following Goals and Objectives have been the subject of
a public hearing and have been adopted and recommended by the
Planning Board, as well as the Economic Development Committee.
1. To create and maintain a balanced and sustainable local
economy while preserving and enhancing Mashpee' s environment and
cultural heritage. P'
Atli",,P
2. To increase the incomes of Mashpee residents.
3 . To provide our residents with a full range of commercial iil; T
facilities and services in keeping with the community' s
size and potential market area. "I
4. To increase the town' s industrial and commercial tax
base while minimizing increased municipal service costs, ;
environmental impacts and other adverse impacts on the Iilidr;'
E
community. ®' ,!
There is also included in this Element a list of Community
Objectives (A-P) , which Mr. Fudala made reference to but did not !
address individually.
1
