^ .l
Maslipee Inclusion and Diversity Committee
16 Great Neck R.oadNorth
Nashpee, M-A 02649
resident who raised the question about crossing. She felt frustrated and people have
asked, but how does this get pursued. One solution is to deal with the bus company. Who
puts up protections for people to stand? Who determines routes and stops? That is all
under the Commission for Barnstable County.
She came up with some example questions to ask:
- Do you know if this issue is being addressed in any way?
- In your perspective, what action is needed?
-What process would you recommended?
- Could you offer support?
The second issue, why is there not a crosswalk or a light for pedestrians at Orchard Road
leading to the bus area? This is complicated as Route 28 is run by the State. You cannot
simply put a crosswalk at that junction without there being a sidewalk, which requires ADA
rules in terms of the curb. The Town would have to request the State put in sidewalks.
Sometimes State Representatives have budgets they could use. She then thought about
the pathway that goes from the building and who owns/manages that land? Maybe they
could build a Dorothy pathway (that was her name).
Ms. Stevenson went on to mention geographic mapping, maybe the students could do
something with identifying areas in Town that need more accessibility.
Mr. Klein went to see where she was crossing. He saw there was a bus stop. He contacted
the Mashpee DPW, who couldn't help him. He contacted the Cape Cod Commission who
directed him to the State. He sent an E-mail to the Taunton area. He suggests speaking at
a Planning Board or Select Board meeting. Maybe they have the ability to put pressure
where appropriate. He stated there was an alarming total of 21 pedestrians killed on Cape
Cod in the past year.
Ms. Stevenson would like to put together a comprehensive description of what needs to be
done and then go to the Town or State. Right now she would like to just gather the
information. Even if only by talking to people, there may be a group already working on
something. We need to find out what we don't know. The Housing Authority is involved.
Mr. Klein would like to start putting pressure on the people that can make the changes, and
locally with the Select Board or Town Manager.
Chairwoman reiterated there is a very long list she gave him and Mr. Fand. Right now she
would like to just gather information and ask questions.
3
