Indigenous Peoples Day— I oth
Guest: Brad Sweet, Mashpee Congregational o
In the movement to find housingfor Afghan Refugees, Chairwoman was encouraging the
MIDC to look into t was going on in Mashpee. Falmouth and Sandwich both have Afghan
families. Sally Norris is a Reverendt the Congregational Church and she offered Mr. Sweets
name. There is a group beingformed through the Church. They are trying o facilitate a Zoo
with the group in Worcester responsible for this movement. She asked Mr. Sweet if there was
anything the Committee can do to support and wanted to know what was going on within this
group.
Brad Sweet introduced i self. He is a member at the Mashpee Congregational Church. They
have not had an opportunity as a Church to bring their folks together. He is currently on a tea
that helps families alongside organizations helping people on the Cape. They help Mashpee
Boys and Girls Clubs, meals for homeless, as well as Hyannis Baby Center. Their current work
would support these Afghan families when they arrive on Cape Cod. The Mashpee
Congregational Churc is a 15 year old Church hidden in New Seabury. They have to get out
of that area to find activities or people in need. It can be financial support, but it is more of a
labor do , He has been cooking for the kids for 15 years every Friday night. He is unsure
how the Afghan Refugee's would be supported, but typically they would turn to their fella
members at the Congregation and ask for needs. They are wondering if this will happen, but
also what is the role of MI DC? Can the Church complement and support without jumping in
totally? He would like to find a way to help, but exactly how, he is unsure.
s. Stevenson wouldof like the o i e to spearhead is movement, but like the Church,
MIDC would support licize needs. She would like to find out how this carve about in
Falmouth and Sanis . She is happy to meet him ando y are willing to work on this,
and now eachrow is aware of one anot er's presence.
