3
wlasFt Pee
1"ncCusion and Diversity Committee
.P y
16 Great .Neck R.oad.North
Mashpee, MA 02649
Ms. Hicks reads a lot of books on diversity. She heard from a friend in her book club there
was an opening. Her family is biracial and she had blinders on her whole life. She has been
retired for two years and wanted to do something in the community when COVID restrictions
were lifted. She was involved in the Chamber for years. Learning to understand more about
diversity is a great place to put her energy. She looks forward to sharing and learning along
the way. She loves the sense of community.
Mr. Kupferman commented that his motivation was around George Floyd, and in learning
more, he wrote a lot of letters to the editor.
Ms. Stevenson stated her drive was attending the Women's March in DC. She came back
and had this feeling like she ought to do more. It starts locally. It seemed like there was a
need at the time to stand up and do something.
NEW BUSINESS
1. Welcome Jayden Bryant and Rachel Hicks
Jayden has agreed to be the other Student Representative. She is a junior and will be with
the Committee for the next two years.
Amna stated she is also in the Human Rights Club and is helping with the immigration
project.
2. Statement from Committee for Local Comprehensive Plan
There is a move to update the LCP. This is a way for the town to see where it sees itself
now and where it wants to see itself going in years to come. This is an opportunity to get as
many stakeholders and people in the community looking at what the needs are through
different lenses. She wanted to check with the Committee and represent the Committee in
making a recommendation. One consideration would be accessibility for different areas of
Mashpee. Not only is there a need on Rt. 28 at the elderly housing, but other pockets in
town where low income, elderly, or students, people that do not/ cannot have cars, need
access to transportation. She would like there to be consideration in the Local Plan to look
at those areas. She would like to see more sidewalks and crossings to provide more
assistance to public transportation. It's a long term project.
3. Land Acknowledgement
Ms. Stevenson commented if any Committee will partake in this it should be MIDC. She
would like to recommend that every meeting begin with the Land Acknowledgement
statement. They made one for Race Amity Day.
4
