0f MASA
1lt; qtb
h
w
Mashpee 1"ncCusion and Diversity Committee
16 Great .Neck Road North
Mashpee, M-A 02649
Ms. Stevenson informed everyone that Kim Landry sent along a program being held at
Mashpee Public Library called, Bystander Training put on by the No Place for Hate in
Barnstable. Ms. Stevenson will forward along to the members. She explained this is a
bystander observing someone being harassed, bullied, or spoken to derogatorily from
someone who is different. There are five different options on how one can respond in a
safe manner. She is going to schedule a new Coalition meeting due to the incidents in
different communities relating to racism, diversity, and non-acceptance. It would be
beneficial for all committees to listen and circulate ideas that develop strategies on how a
committee like ours could respond. Duxbury had an incident last year with a football team
using anti-Semitic codes while they were playing. She brought this up because she would
like to hear how the members responded and the results. Sandwich had a racial issue in
their school between two boys recently so this is timely to discuss. She feels there has
been an issue here as well. She wrote an opinion piece for The Enterprise this past Friday
and represented herself. Chairwoman explained the LCP meeting that transpired last
weekend had no acknowledgment of the Tribal presence in the community anywhere on
their maps. Not the historical points, reservation, or Government Center. This was an
omission that was considered to be hurtful to the Tribal members. She did more research,
and having people feel like they truly belong, means they then participate and feel that they
can contribute.
OLD BUSINESS:
1. Diversity Project for May: "Who We Are" (prospective name)
It is now being held on Thursday May 26th from 7p-9p at the suggestion of the students.
Amna commented on the progression of the project and where it stands now. She stated
there needs to be one more interview then they will finish the write ups and put it all
together.
Chairwoman discussed with Mr. Miller, who runs the picture framing store, and he is all set
to begin the process. She is pleased with how the project is coming out. The project
received a sponsorship of$2,000 from Cape Cod Five. It received an additional donation of
$250 from a couple and $500 from the Mass Cultural Council. There are still some funding
issues with billing appropriate departments, and who will handle the money for the "Who
We Are" as they are working closely with the schools. Contracts are being worked out to
make it happen.
2. Race Amity Day Festival: June 12, 2022 from 12:OOp.m. -4:OOp.m.
3
