This historic cemetery is a burial resting place for early Mashpee families
including Civil War Veteran Ezra Jones.
A question from CPC member Mary Waygan asked if there are Native American remains at the
Lakewood Cemetery, and how would the project's restoration activities be coordinated with the
Tribe.
Ava Costello, Chair of the Historical Committee stated that Tribal Chairman and Historical
Commission member Brian Weeden is aware of the proposed restoration project that does not
involve the movement of stones. Restoration work is limited to the cleaning of stones, and
bringing the stones to an upright position. Historical Commission member Richard DeSorgher
indicated he has a list of the named stones to be cleaned and repaired.
Motion made by Mr. Larkin to approve and recommend to the May 2022 Special Town
Meeting the Restoration of the Lakewood Cemetery project in the amount of$42,438 with
funding to derive from the CPA 10%Historic Reserve for this purpose.
Motion seconded by Mr. Hyde.
VOTE: Unanimous. 9-0.
Roll Call Vote:
Mr. Gottlieb, yes Mrs. Thayer, yes Mr. Hyde, yes
Mr. Larkin, yes Ms. Waygan, yes Ms. Barbee, yes Mr. Shackett, yes
Mr. Smith yes Ms. Russell, yes Opposed, none
