The goal is to acquire the collection of contiguous parcels
for conservation.
It was noted that some of the owners are highly motivated to sell, the others are motivated
subject to satisfactory terms and conditions. There is an interest for the Town to contemplate all
of the acreage, pending an additional appraisal and thoughtful ownership of the Community
Preservation Committee and what it stands for.
The properties are listed on the Town's Open Space Plan of primary interest, and lie within the
boundaries of the Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge. With the protection of the trails, the
owners desire the property to remain fallow. The owners are noted to be agreeable to trail access
to the pond. However, there is no desire to have a kayak launch to the pond.
It is hopeful the Town would work with a partnering organization to hold a Conservation
Restriction (CR) on the property. Letters of support from the Native Land Conservancy, Orenda
Wildlife Land Trust and Trustees for Reservation are included in the application. These agencies
may want to assume responsibilities associated to a CR on the subject property. Of note is
additional letters of support from the Planning Boad, Save Mashpee-Wakeby Pond Alliance and
Friends of the Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge. The Conservation Commission is expected to
provide a letter of support when discussing this matter at their public meeting in mid -November.
Mr. Lehrer recommended the CPC move forward with an appraisal of the subject property
negotiating the 17.27 acres as a whole. As this matter was considered, the CPC agreed to form a
subcommittee to meet with the property owners before an appraisal is authorized. Mr. Lehrer
indicated he would facilitate the connection of the subcommittee with the property owners to
begin negotiations.
Motion made by Ms. Barbee to appoint Arden Russell and Richard Klein to the
subcommittee as referenced offering the invitation to Brian Hyde and Michaela Wyman -
Colombo for a maximum of (3) subcommittee members.
Motion seconded by Mr. Klein.
VOTE: Unanimous. 5-0.
Roll Call Vote:
Ms. Russell, yes Ms. Waygan, yes Ms. Barbee, yes
Mr. Klein, yes Ms. Godfrey, yes Opposed, none
