COMMISSIONER COMMENT
At the Chair's request, the Agent outlines the process. Once the application is complete,
it will be forwarded to the Conservation Department. The agent will review it and then present it
to the Town Manager and/or the Select Board. Notably, the Town Manager is already aware of
the Land Stewardship application for the Attaquin LB property. Additionally, the Chair suggests
convening a meeting between the Conservation Department and the Town Manager to discuss
Mr. Faud's request and address any concerns from relevant parties.
PUBLIC COMMENT
Virginia Scharfenberg, Chair of the Mashpee Community Garden Advisory Committee,
expresses concerns regarding the impact of Mr. Faud's proposed work. The Committee has
encountered issues with Mr. Faud's activities related to the community garden. His proposal
included the community garden space, native planting, and the area behind the compost bins. Ms.
Scharfenberg notes that Mr. Faud has disregarded directives and requests regarding the use of the
property beyond the fence.
Specifically, his established rhubarb garden raises concerns. Allowing it would set a precedent
for the other 33 gardeners to plant freely on town-owned property, which could lead to
complications. Additionally, the Department of Public Works (DPW) will provide an area for
plant detritus disposal by gardeners, but Mr. Faud has taken it upon himself to claim that space
despite requests from fellow gardeners to stop.
Due to the lack of collaborative effort and cooperation, the Committee does not support Mr.
Faud's request for Land Stewardship.
When asked about potential objections to invasive species control, Ms. Scharfenberg clarified
that there would be no objection if handled by a licensed pesticide professional. She recommends
that any volunteer assisting with invasive species removal should have expertise in the field.
CONCLUSION
The Chair has asked the Agent to coordinate a joint meeting involving the Town Manager, Select
Board, Mashpee Community Garden Advisory Committee, and Mr. Faud. The purpose of this
meeting is to discuss relevant matters collaboratively.
ADDITIONAL DISCUSSION
The Agent introduces the new recording secretary, Kathleen Quist.
PUBLIC HEARING
5
