Mashpee Inclusion and Diversity Committee
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, MA 02649
Status with School Committee - Don Myers
Chair Stevenson noted this Committee looked at this in August at length, so what is the next
step? There was mention of having both committees do a joint meeting. Is that still something
the School Committee is interested in?

Mr. Myers initially requested times that would work for a joint meeting. The submission
deadline for May Town Meeting is February. We need to decide if what is being proposed is
necessary or if there are alternative ways to approach this. This Committee focusses on the
town side, which is a much different structure. The only overlap with what is happening now is
voting members involving the Tribe and members of the school. The School Committee is
proposing to add Fire Chief, Police Chief, and Town Manager to this Mashpee Cares
Committee. There will also be three members At Large. The MIDC doesn’t have anything in a
preamble that talks about the role it has with the Select Board, its silent. He read an email he
received; the comment was that this Committee does not get asked to deal with issues about
DEI and would require approval by the Select Board or Town voters. Another issue is funding,
the Town Manager is the one who approves the budget recommendation. This group does host
events and has processes to help fund events to maintain that representation. The Select
Board liaison doesn’t attend meetings often. This Committees deals with town-oriented DEI
issues.

It was proposed that this be discussed in a special meeting or working session.

Mr. Myers would like three possible dates and times, and he will see if anything works for the
School Committee members. He noted the Select Board could amend this group’s purpose. It
will determined whether what is being proposed is in the scheme of what this Committee is
doing or could do.

Survey
Hope Hanscom and Dan Kupferman volunteered to work on this. Chair would like a couple
people to take the survey and provide feedback.

In consideration to volunteering her time, Hope Hanscom informed the Committee of her
resignation with Mashpee Public Schools, which means she will most likely be off this
Committee soon. She will be moving to Cape Cod Collaborative.

Race Amity Day Update
Meeting tomorrow night, 11/20/24.

3
