Finance, insurance and real estate has been a significant <br /> source of growth in the region and an important component <br /> of Mashpee ' s economy. <br /> In spite of steady decline, the agriculture, forestry and <br /> fisheries industry continues to be more important in Mashpee <br /> and Barnstable County than it is state- and nationwide. <br /> Mashpee-based transportation, communications and utilities <br /> employment has shown remarkable growth. <br /> - Mashpee-based government employment has expanded significantly <br /> since 1984 in order to cope with the town' s growing <br /> population. In 1993 , it accounted for 13% of Mashpee <br /> employment, about 280 jobs . <br /> The service sector is an important component of the regi.on' s <br /> economic base and a growing source of employment for Barnstable <br /> County residents , particularly health services. <br /> Cape Cod is developing a small cluster of high technology <br /> based companies particularly in' the area of marine technology, <br /> software, and telecommunications . The Internet and World <br /> Wide Web were cited. <br /> Based on their findings, Mt. Auburn has selected some industries <br /> for further research based on their potential for job and <br /> business growth on the Cape, and Mashpee specifically which <br /> are: Tourism with a. focus on Arts , Cultural Heritage, and the <br /> Environment, Marine Technology, Telecommunications, Software, <br /> Specialty Foods , and Aquaculture. <br /> A List of existing Mashpee Businesses by Industry was also part <br /> of this Report. <br /> A List of Mashpee Businesses to be interviewed by Mt. Auburn <br /> was included. EDC suggested some additions to this List such <br /> as: Computers With Fear (Linda Vanderzee) , Trans Flow Energy <br /> (Ben Gordon) , Shellbach Place (Mr. Terry) , and JTEC. Ted <br /> suggested interviewing the Town Planner since he can give an <br /> overview of the Town and its focus which could save time and <br /> money. <br /> Mt. Auburn will look at industries in more detail to see if <br /> there is a match with the infrstructure. Beth noted that the <br /> specialty foods industry ties in with the tourist trade. Sharon <br /> mentioned that a new spice company has opened in the Delta <br /> Building. The positive and negative impact to Mashpee of having <br /> a Walmart or Costco was discussed; EDC expressed interest in <br /> creating jobs and the tax base. <br /> -3- <br />
