9
pumped and caved in or pumped and removed.
Mr. Ball asked who made this decision?
Mr. Harrington stated that both the health agent and the installer would look at it
in the field. They can address it when they go out to do their 'bottom of the hole"
investigation.
Mr. Doherty enter the conversation again by reconfirming that Mr. Harrington was
referring to pre-cast typical 6' pit that is structurally sound. The health agent and
the BOH just won't know the condition of the material around it. For whatever
reason the health agent and the BOH is stating that the system has failed
necessitating the installation of a newer galley infiltrator or floater diffusers. He
would be hard pressed to believe that it would be self-cleaning without someone
actually doing a study.
Mr. Santos stated that his first question regarding this issue would be "If this
system has been failed how could you even count on the it as a back up?"
Mr. Harington responded that it would assist by mere capacity alone. His
scientific take on this and how it was explained to him through water pollution and
treatment is "Once you take away the food for the bacteria the bacteria eat
themselves." If this pit or whatever leaching facility that fails by the biological
material building up over the years time. The biological material will slowly
basically dwindle down because the bacteria will eat themselves down. Therefore,
the hydraulics will work better.
Mr. Doherty then asked, "What about accumulated solids such as soaps, waxes
and grease?"
Mr. Harrington stated that the accumulated solids are a different story. If the pit is
failed by grease there is no other solution other than jumping down into the pit
and poking holes with soil fracturing of the whole deal to make this work.
Mr. Doherty suggested that they open the proverbial can of worms by discussing
this a little further. If the leach rate of the replacement facility is 'x" and the
system is overtaxed. Therefore, the secondary pit is called into use and the
material is going to sit. Is this good or bad? Obviously, just by nature of it's volume
it's going to handle the problem for the weekend.
Mr. Harrington interjected that if it was a 6' pit. It was a 1000-gallons worth of
storage.
Mr. Doherty agreed and continued with his issue then being that of storage. He
doesn't feel that it's realistic to think that nothing will leach albeit very slowly over
a certain period of time.
Mr. Ball stated that the process would take time. The material will drain out and
dry out with the new system doing it first.
