in agreement that the bathrooms were very attractive as they are, and that tiling the walls
would do nothing to improve the appearance of the rooms. It was unanimously agreed to
drop the idea of filing the bathroom walls.
PROJECTS
Furniture—Jim Long. Jim distributed a report which listed the furniture expenditures to
date. Total expenditure to date is roughly$86,000. He commented on the following items:
• Blinds—a few more need to be added for windows and doors that face the hallways, i.e.,
the window in Lynne Waterman's office
• Files—additional two-and four-drawer files have been purchased
• Miscellaneous—list of items purchased includes plastic shelving units, a green wagon for
transporting items around the building, a wet1dry vacuum, lamps, dry mops, brooms,
plungers, dust pans, etc.
One item purchased that is not included in the furniture budget is a five-CD changer for the
Great Room, to provide background music when appropriate.
Other items needed:
• a refrigerator to be installed underneath the coffee machine in the lobby
• patio and porch furniture
• a bench, or benches, for the entryway outside the building
Discussion followed regarding whether or not to purchase a barbecue unit for the outside
patio.
• Pro arguments: if available, it will be used; stainless steel units easy to clean; can be
stored outside year-long with a cover.
• Con arguments: easier and less expensive to rent one when needed; problem to
maintain; will not be used.
After discussion, the committee voted 3 in favor of, 2 against, purchasing a stainless steel
barbecue unit with a gas tank, spending about$2000. The Friends have funds available and
will be approached to purchase the unit.
Patio Fumiture. Jim Long plans to follow up with Bud Abbott to contact the individual who
offered to donate funds($2500 to$3000)for the patio furniture. It was suggested that Jim
and Bud visit the Cape Leisure in Cotuit, and the Patio Shop near McArthur Highway to get
ideas for a layout of furniture for the Senior Center patio. When the decision is made as to
what is needed, Jim will ask Terry for the name of a good wholesaler who carries patio
furniture. The furniture can be covered and stored outside in the winter months.
Security System. Jim Long reported that the security system has problems. The system
that was installed appears to be very involved and convoluted. When the building is
accessed on the weekends, the alarm goes off even though it has been programmed to
disarm itself during certain hours. Jim Long set up the specs for hours when the alarm
should go off, and issued passwords to certain individuals. Greg Taylor, designated to be the
caretaker of the access codes, is called by the Police Department when the alarm goes off.
Ray Martini, who was designated to be responsible for internal systems in the building, has
not been to work since the Senior Center opened, due to an accident. In short, the system is
not functioning smoothly. Jim suggested, and the committee agreed, that the system be left
in place for 6 months, on a trial basis. At the end of six months, a decision can be made as
to whether or not to keep the system. It was suggested that labels advertising the fact that a
security system is installed be placed on outside doors and certain windows, as a deterrent to
anyone who is tempted to gain entry to the Center.
Landscaping—Ed Adams. Ed Adams reported that he had talked recently with Ellis Allen,
who is still in Florida and will be returning the middle of March. Ed discussed the idea with
Ellis of having sod around the front of the building. Ellis is ready to get going, on his return, to
complete the landscaping plans with a few more shrubs and trees, a lawn, field grass, and
2
