them up and taking them down, as well as finding a convenient storage space for them when not in use. FMSC has been offered a donation of$2500 to$3000 to pay for the patio furniture. Jim Long stated that of the$100,000 budgeted for furniture, $89,000 has been spent. Payments for the audio and alarm systems are still outstanding, and will be covered by the remaining$11,000 from the furniture budget. Jim also reported that the portable hearing aids for the Center had been delivered. Iry Goldberg inquired as to whether an estimate had been received from the audio systems people on a portable mike for the Center. Jim Long stated that he had not seen one but would follow up, as this is an important item and should be ordered while there is still money available. Landscaping—Ed Adams. • Trees. Ed reported that Ellis Allen will be back from Florida very soon. Ed will be in touch with him about how much more can be expected from Tavares as to the moving and replanting of trees that have been donated. The Town has some trees that are available to the Senior Center, and there may be other sources, as well. • Shrubs. Regarding shrubs, there are more to be donated. Also, it may be possible to get an additional price break at Mahoney's for some more shrubs. • Irrigation System. The irrigation system still needs to be installed. This will happen after the lawn is graded. • Lawn and Grass. This will be completed in the spring. - • Walking Trails&Meditation Area. Art Weinstein asked about the possibility of putting in some walking trails behind the Center. Iry recommended that a meeting be arranged with the landscaping committee when Ellis Allen returns, to discuss plans for the meditation area as well as the possibility of putting in some walking trails. Iry Goldberg, Ed Adams, Art Weinstein,,Jim Long, Ellis Allen and Kathryn from DPW will attend this meeting. Jim reminded the committee that there was$1400 available in donated funds to be used toward the development of a meditation area on the grounds of the Center. • Ongoing Landscape Maintenance. It is the expectation of the Senior Center Building Committee that the Town will be responsible for landscaping maintenance, including mowing the lawn. Joyce Mason stated that the Town will "do its best"to maintain the property around the Senior Center, as they have in the past. Lightning Protection—Ed Adams. Iry Goldberg reported that two quotes for lightning protection for the Senior Center had been received. One was for$14,000 and the second one was for$11,000. Mike Baker, from Dartmouth, MA., followed up his quote with a formal bid of$11,000 for the installation of lightning protection for the entire building, including the cupola. Joyce Mason asked whether the lightning protection was necessary. Iry Goldberg responded that in his many years of experience in the industry, buildings that were lightning- protected were never struck by lightning. He further stated that the Senior Center, which is completely exposed, with no trees around it, is a sure target for a lightning strike. Joyce stated that a change order would need to be forwarded to JCA for review of the bids in order to use the contingency funds for the work. The Board of Selectmen then would have to approve the final bid. It was agreed that the Senior Center Building Committee would forward the change order to JCA for the lightning protection work. Thrift Shop—Jean Noussee. Jean reported that the site for the Thrift Shop had been selected, directly across from the entrance to the new Senior Center, adjacent to the parking lot. Ernest Virgilio is drawing up plans for a structure that will be set on a 28'x 32' concrete slab. There will be a 5 ft. walkway around the perimeter of the structure, making it wheelchair accessible. Mr. Virgilio will be looking at three or four bids for both a pre-fab and a wood-constructed building. Mr. Virgilio estimates that it will take about 10 weeks to build the structure, which will have electricity and telephone lines, but no running water. Wood shingles on the outside of the structure will match the finish of the exterior of the Senior Center. Friends of the Council on Aging are paying for the construction of the new Thrift Shop. Air conditioners from the old Thrift Shop will be moved to the new Thrift Shop building. PARKING LOT LIGHTING—Ernest Virgilio. Mr. Virgilio reported that he needs more time to zero in on the best lighting arrangement for the lighting fixtures around the front of the Senior Center. There are two possible ways to go. One option is to change the transformer and the light in the existing lighting fixture. This would reduce the light wattage by 50%. Mr. Virgilio has bids from two contractors that will do the job for$500 in one light to see if it fixes the problem. A second option would be to adapt a new light onto the pole (called a shoe box down light), that would deflect the lighting 2
