she can do some investigation .
Carl Franceschi spoke with Mege Transportation company who
handles Mashpee' s busing about calculating the cost of busing.
The cost is not a direct relation of how far the students live
from the school because each bus has fixed costs regardless of
how many miles they are driving . The more important calculation
is how many students will be walking and how many buses will be
required .
Dr . DeMoura stated it is an issue the town has to grabble with .
Technically students in grade 7-12 can walk no matter where they
live in town . The reality is there are no sidewalks and it is
difficult to get from many parts of town to the schools. Children
who have access to pathways could reasonably walk up to 2 miles
but it depends where it is. You cannot just draw a circle around
the school .
The school dept. now spends $440, 000 per year on transportation.
However , they only have 4 buses for 300 high school students
because many take their cars.
(Joe Polito joined the meeting a 4: 25 p.m. )
The junior high school students will be at this building for at
least 5 years.
• Greg Taylor explained Mashpee uses a 4 tier system for handling
the students, so they already have the buses .
Peter said for the initial opening of the school we should be
prepared to bus everyone , but 10 years from now we may have more
sidewalks and more students can walk .
Carl stated an issue came up at the open forum which is not on
the matrix, what if the school is not put on the site, what might
go there, what are those implications.
He suggested talking with the Planning Board and with Town
Planner Tom Fudala. Tom suggested the Nov. 3rd meeting.
Mr. Jones stated the extent to which the speed of construction is
or is not influenced by the site is another consideration for the
matrix. Meeting this timetable is still the biggest challenge .
Site Development Costs.
The Mashpee Taxpayers Association sent a breakdown of cost issues
they would like to see resolved . Mr. Dinizio explained these
issues may be addressed in the course of design but it is not
something for this Committee to address now.
Carl Franceschi presented a breakdown of the $27 million. It is
based only on his experience, not a specific design . The bottom
line is the same on both sites. The site development costs is
the major difference and he will try to refine that further.
• Contingency is for any unforseen conditions. This breakdown
assumes the building costs are the same. A building which is
stepped and multi-leveled may cost more to build but it also
presents more opportunities.
2
