final report and make a recommendation . The Committee will then
vote and make a recommendation to the Board of Selectmen who meet
the next Monday . This Committee only makes a recommendation to
the Selectmen. The warrant will contain only 1 article and only
the 1 chosen site will be on the warrant.
Mr. Kinney asked why the warrant will offer only 1 choice and not
let the town people vote for one or another?
Mr. Dinizio explained the Selectmen have asked the Committee to
recommend a site, it is a very detailed process with many facts
to review. It cannot be done in a 10 minute presentation . Also,
it takes a 2/3 vote to acquire the land and we may never get 2/3
for either site . The Selectmen agreed that is asking for
confusion .
Mr . McGee asked what happens if the people don ' t vote for the
school , we are back to square one? He asked again why we don ' t
build on the base?
Mr. Greelish explained the Mashpee area of the base is still
highly active. There is no place to put a school , it wasn ' t a
viable option . Mashpee does not lease their land to the base,
they have sold it to them, it is the governments property and we
would have to site the school on either Falmouth, Bourne or
• Sanwich's property.
Mr . Pocknett stated he is totally against the Noisy Hole
location. This is the spiritual center of Mashpee. The sites,
in his mind , will never be equal . Route 130 is a quiet
residential , easy going street. Every town or city has a center,
presently the rotary area is the center of Mashpee. Now you want
to put a high school on one of the spokes and change the
character of 130 . The center area runs over , around, under and
through him. He understands things have to change and he
understands the town needs a high school . He feels when these
things get destroyed.
Steve Paxton , Juniper Drive. He lives very close to So. Sandwich
Road and the proposed entrance to the high school . The property
is now undeveloped and of course that would be the best way to
leave it but it has no protection . He thinks the school would
protect the area more than if there were condos built there. He
does not want to see kids in cars driving out to Route 151 . The
high speed of that road makes him nervous.
Mr. Bill Jones asked Mr. Pocknett what his vision of the school
would be, if it were built in this area? That area will be
developed as a park to the extent possible. A pleasant place to
walk or bike through. It will not be an industrial looking area.
• No one will be completely happy with this decision either way we
go. The school will be one that is architecturally attractive,
one that fits the land . He will give what Mr . Pocknett said a
great deal of weight because he understands the depth of feeling
5
