I
take cars, based on the percentage who use cars today to go to
Falmouth and assuming it will stay about the same.
Dr. DeMoura does not think they should put a lot of weight on
busing costs. They overload the buses in the start of the year,
but after a few months the students are not there.
To arrive at the $50-70, 000 savings: Mashpee 's busing costs are
$450 ,000 of which about 25-30% are for high school students. A
certain percentage of that can be saved on one site vs . the
other. There is a larger savings in reducing the number of buses
but there is also a savings in mileage. At a minimum there will
Ili be a $15-20 , 000 savings in, mileage .
Mr. Jones mentioned for approximately the first 5 years 7th and
8th grade students will be going to this school .
There is an assumption here that sidewalks will follow the school
and people will have a problem with that.
The State does reimburse Mashpee 34% of our busing costs . Dr.
DeMoura added they only reimburse for over 1 1 /2 miles.
• The busing costs are operational costs which are the largest
expense in a school - not the building (which is 6% of the total
costs) . Savings will be year after year. DRA' s report compared
this to the increased development costs but that is reimbursed
58% by the State.
The Committee agreed busing costs will represent a savings at the
9 9
Center site vs . the 151 site, always.
Mr. Greelish thinks that has to be weighed against the increased
maintenance at the Center site because of the layout - expansive
grounds.
DRA will research the proposed cost of maintenance at the Center
site.
Mr. Polito suggested the Center site will cost less to maintain
because of the type of landscaping ; you can use more natural
materials there . There 151 site will be cleared and planted.
Wetlands: the Conservation Agent had said DRA did not walk the
site. Mr. Franceschi said he has done that now. The site can be
developed without impacting the wetlands.
Selectmen Mills wants to know why we are not giving the Mashpee
River the same protection as the Quashnet River?
Mr. Franceschi explained there is an "elbow" in the Mashpee River
and Meetinghouse Rd runs against it - the buffer is already
destroyed. The Quashnet River slopes, making it unbuildable and
• therefore the increased buffer.
Conservation Agent Bob Sherman is clearer on the purpose of the
schematic plans.
5
