The Committee discussed the 7-12 configuration .
Ray stated the decisions which have to be made - you can spend the money to
separate the 7 & 8th grades for the 5 years they will be in the school and
compromise the building for the rest of its existence or just operate the
high school as a 7-12 or try to do both . He thinks you can do both .
He showed a scheme, where 7 , 8 and 9 would be in 1 house of the building .
7th grades classes downstairs , 8th would have some on the first and some on
the second floor rooms and 9th grade would be all upstairs . The Committee
might consider another entry , dropoff area specifically for the junior high
students - to give them identity .
Steve said if they are going to be on the same bus , the point is moot.
Peter read a letter from Susan Butler, a school psychologist who works with
the Middle School age group . She states "as much as possible a separate
environment should be created for the middle school students , including
separate entrance, separate common area and ideally a separate bus
schedule . "
Ray thinks the separate entrance , in the front of the school , for the
middle school students , opens up a lot of flexibility . It could be used as
a second entrance at night . It could serve as a separate pick up area for
that age group.
Merry Sue said a majority of these students are coming in from the bus .
She wants to keep the symmetry between houses .
Joe asked about the cafeteria, can the 7 , 8 be separated from the 9-12 ,
using architecture as a divider? Nantucket was designed to separate the
eating function between the 2 groups . He is concerned about 2 entrances .
Dining is a strong activity , it could serve as a device to control entry to
both houses .
Ray said you don ' t want both groups coming into the same space .
Ed added the problem with moving the cafeteria is the kitchen and loading
dock comes with it . It is where it is because of all the relationships.
The Committee must make a decision on the science labs location .
option 1 - stacked 4 on first , 4 on second floor.
Merry Sue noted the alternative school is on the wrong side in this scheme .
It should not be on the junior high side.
Option 2 - all labs on the second floor . Home economics moves downstairs ,
where it is more useable for Leisure Services . 2 of the labs could be used
just for junior high . This scheme works better for junior high
configuration .
Joe thinks the science labs need the natural light and air - which would
occur in option 1 .
The Committee agreed the building is flexible enough to handle the various
grade configurations .
Bill Martiros said last week Mark Chen was trying to determine the
architectural concept of the Cape , of Mashpee . Mashpee Commons is a good
indication of that.
Paul said his idea of the Cape style is the Cape style house with a slanted
roof , or saltbox , not a rounded roof.
6
