Ray said there is some strong indian imagery in that structure ( a long
house) .
Ed Frenette said you have to go back to basics- what kind of roofs can you
put on a building? They have tried to weave architectural character into
the building , where it is possible . If you try to put a Cape Cod roof on a
large building , you can ' t do it . They tried to do it in the smaller areas.
Two authorities ( Joan and Dan ) who say vaulted roofs have historical ties .
one thing that gives the Cape its character is that it has a lot of
diversity. This building has a lot of diversity yet holds together as a
single building .
Tom reminded everyone that this building is larger than the total of all
the buildings in Mashpee Commons .
Dan Salien commented on this imagery . He sent Mark Chen some materials he
had gathered for a project for the Gay Head Wampanoags . He became familiar
with the Wigwam architectural form, which is the heritage of the New
England American indian tribes . It was a form created by bending of green
branches to form a vaulted roof , covered in thatch . The more he thought
about it the more it struck him as a possibility or source of inspiration
for characterizing Mashpee High School . Mashpee is the one place on the
Cape where the Indian and Colonial cultures have merged . This sort of
architectural inspiration is possibly fitting , but it is up to the
Committee to decide.
Paul said if the Committee agrees on this concept, that type of statement
should be put on the building so people present and future can understand
what the design represents .
Peter mentioned the casino in Conn . They also have a lot of native
american influence. They did it through interior design and colors .
Ed said the statement Dan made is as poetic a statement as you will get as
to what makes this different from everything else . We can run with that
idea and reinforce it with color and texture and make it come true .
Joe has a concern with the exterior wall and roof , uniting them so there
is a consistent language around the perimeter .
Ray thinks they have done that.
Joe is also concerned about the configuration , the adaptation of the indian
long house by creating a very expensive bowed roof.
Ray said that is not true. There is very little cost difference between a
pitched and bowed .
Joe asked how they will clad it?
With applied membrane
Ed asked the Committee to reach consensus , conceptually . If you like it,
with some modification , then our job is to price it out. We need a
starting point. We won ' t do an incredibly expensive roof if we can ' t
afford it.
Peter asked if there is an advantage to go forward with 2 roof alternatives
at this time and price them, will it save time?
Ray said it will not save time .
Joe said the worst thing you can do is rush this .
Peter asked him if he has a strong desire to change this roof?
Joe said he does . He prefers plain , simple, pitched roof . Something like
7
