They are not, a high proportion of them are. They are all
college educated architects. SMMA has a higher proportion of
quality people working at there because they have continued
hiring during this recession while other firms were laying people
off.
July Mills asked how long it takes to get a groundwater discharge
permit?
Mr. Solien responded about 1 year form the time the full
application is submitted . It takes about 90 days to develop the
application, for the investigation to go on.
Judy asked if the permitting would hold up the overall project?
Mr. Solien said the investigation should begin as soon as
possible.
Ms. Mills asked how many high schools they have built?
Mr. Frenette said 10 in the last 7-8 years. Their experience is
current; They are trying to be leaders in this field. Perkins
and Will have built over 100.
Carol Jacobson wanted to follow up on the Sept. 1996 opening
date. It would be a rush but it is doable?
Mr. Frenette said he couldn't guarantee it but if we take
advantage of every minute. The burden is on the town of
Mashpee ! !
Ms. Jacobson said barring absolute completion, is it possible to
finish the core and 1 wing to house the students we need to?
Mr. Frenette said absolutely. You could run the high school
without the pool or the theater while they are being finished.
Mr. Dinizio asked if the overall cost of the project will be more
working that way?
Mr. Frenette said the cost will be more , with the rate of
inflation going up.
Nancy Caffyn said Mashpee does not have a teaching staff to
review the plans. In the tours of other high schools, there were
many problems because the staff did not review the plan. How do
they propose we handle that?
Mr. Frenette explained a similar situation he had when designing
a high school for the arts, 5 years ago. He suggested bring on
surrogate teachers, advocates to act as your consultants. You
may have to use some specialty consultants.
COMMITTEE DISCUSSION
The interview for The Design Partnership of Cambridge is re-
scheduled for Feb 8th at 6:00 p.m They had a scheduling conflict
so the Selectmen directed this Committee to re-schedule their
interview.
Paul Griffin said he does not have a problem interviewing them
but this Committee made a motion and now the Selectmen are
telling us what to do. We made a motion in which to operate. We
have to operate as a Committee.
6
