specs call for a band , chorus and music theory room each room
being used only 20% of the time for a total of 4,000 sq feet. The
largest room is 1 , 6000 sq feet, not big enough for the entire
band. It can be re-configured to a larger band room of 2 ,000 sq
feet and that could also be used for chorus , a smaller room of
500 sq feet for instrumental instruction and ensambles. This
saves 1 , 500 sq feet or about $200,000 and it is meeting the needs
better.
- Academic classrooms - ed specs call for 37 classrooms but
scheduling demands show a 80% utilization factor. If utilization
is 85%, the classrooms drop to 35 . Under the new State
guidelines for submitting ed spec, only 31 would be required.
The ed specs never take study hall into account. If a computer
room was added in each house, it could be used during students
free time for homework , reports, etc. This reduces demands on
other spaces and is meeting the educational desires.
- Phys ed/athletics - needs demand 3 teaching stations. You are
providing 4 and a pool . 2 gyms and 3 , 000 sq feet for bleachers,
which seem to be fixed , doesn ' t make sense. If the spaces are
combined and the bleachers are collapsible, the space is
available all the time, there is room for a competitive size
court and is making the project more efficient.
Peter Constable and Peter Evans will be the team working on
equipment and furniture from the beginning . It involves a lot of
coordination with the engineers.
Peter Evans , form Universal Engineering said Mashpee seems to
have an ambitious , expensive program. They recommend deferring
purchase of high tech systems to later on , as construction begins
on the project. When you defer the cost you can reduce the
overall cost. This way systems are not obsolete when the school
opens. This is an area where choices are extremely important.
You could spend $25 ,000 per classroom very easily. You have to
carefully examine all new high tech available and determine which
ones do we need in every classroom, or do we only need it in
every 5 classrooms, or centralize it so the students can get to
it.
David Finney talked about the site. Addressing the site issues
are critical to meeting the goals. We can achieve that if we get
the design process and site design to move smoothly. Have to
first determine how the site will be used so we can begin the
testing , wells, borings, etc.
Roger Kallstrom, landscape architect said filing of the ENF
should be the first goal . It will require cooperation from the
Committee because decisions will need to be made quickly. He
visited the site and talked with Tom Fudala and Bob Sherman .
They walked to the river and looked at the power lines . He
presented issues to be decided before filing of ENF.
- traffic and entry of the site - old Barnstable Rd may not be
the best entry because of line of sight.
