Bill Jones checked the references for Chatham and Rockport. Chatham has not been built yet, it is not even designed. Design Partnership are very "casual " about what information they include in their literature . Chatham did interview 10-12 architects and selected Design Partnership. Paul explained they had to search hard for a second school to visit. Much of their work is not completed , some is only feasibility studies . Peter added they are not forthcoming to the extent of the completion of the project. They interviewed really well and understand the programming . They pushed a button with the Committee. Joe Polito joined the meeting and added his thoughts about the site visit. He said he was looking for the excitement of the school , what happened to the beautiful presentation? There was a lot of moisture in the building . The material use, especially on the walls was not very good. Their choice of muted colors had no life in it. The library was very dark, it had little natural light. The library in Lynn was also dark. SYMMES MAINI AND MCKEE Joe explained he called someone who worked as construction manager with Pierce Pierce and Crammer, the firm which merged with SMMA. He had nothing but praise for SMMA as a total company . He said they were patient and listened . Members can make their own assessment regarding the design of the Nantucket school . Of the 6 members of Pierce Pierce and Crammer only 2 came to SMMA. Joe added this person had only good words form Mr. Pornelli , formerly of PP&C now with SMMA who designed Nantucket High School . He said problems were dealt with immediately . It had the usual amount of change orders 1 1/2- 2%. Peter spoke with Ed Frennette , who would be Mashpee' s project manager and asked for 2 examples of their work for the Committee to visit. He said Nantucket and a elementary school in Deerfield . Both were designed by PP & C, they were not SMMA jobs. Perkins and Will work all over the country . They joint venture every job they do. The design work is done by the local partner. Perkins and Will brings their knowledge and experience. SMMA by themselves has not done any high school work. They are in the process of designing Chelsea high school . Very few of the 70 employees of SMMA have ever worked on a school . Do we want them to learn on our school ?
