Committee could go see. Most of their experience is in warehouse
distribution centers. There is one building which also
incorporates 20,000 sq feet of office space.
Peter said his point is they have to be looked at from a
different perspective then everyone else, it may not be a bad
one.
Steve said our criteria of looking at current high school
experience has a hole, because there isn't any.
Paul said the contract with them would have to be structured so
that Perkins and Will will be in this for the long haul . It would
create a challenge for the attorney. He was told that since the
programming was done in Chelsea, no one has seen Perkins and
Will .
Merry Sue said it needs to be clarified what programming means
from their point of view.
Jim Vaccaro explained he visited the school in Santa Fe which
Perkins and Will worked on. It was a year ago so he wasn ' t
looking at it from this same point of view. He spoke with the
principal who was pleased with it, pleased with maintenance and
durability. The material choices were good . It was a beautiful
building.
Joe said he questions their ability to listen because of the
split in firms. He doesn 't think SMMA would be here without
Perkins and Will .
Merry Sue said this Committee must speak with other committees
who have worked with Perkins and Will and a local firm and ask
what they got from Perkins and Will .
Peter said the firm must be looked at in total . Will they
listen. Do they understand high school programming, in total ? Do
they have ability to do in house design/engineering? What design
flair can we expect out of them?
Paul added does the firm have the ability to change the design ,
community to community based on the needs of the community and
listen to the community? Will we be able to find that out with
this firm?
The Committee discussed visiting Nantucket and Deerfield.
Paul asked if there is a consensus of the Committee that SMMA is
still in the top 4 and Nantucket should be visited?
The Committee agreed they need to follow through with their
research on SMMA.
Bill Jones suggested speaking with the retired Superintendent
from Nantucket who can give a lot of history of the project.
Jim Vaccaro mentioned that Nantucket schools are on vacation this
week.
3
