Paul asked which is more economical ? Composition board is about $1 less per foot than wood. Bill said people have been using cedar for hundreds of years. You can bleach it, stain it and it doesn ' t blister or peel . You will have problems with paint. Ed said their recommendation is for cedar . They presented product literature on the other 2 products . The cement board is a new product to the market. Merry Sue asked how long cedar will last before needing replacement? Phil said cedar has lasted on buildings for 100 years, with some attention . Steve said if you stain it when installed and do nothing else it will last 50 years at least. Will the other product last 50 years? We don 't know. The Committee does not need to make a decision tonight. Ed said there is more competition for cedar and you will probably get a lower price. The grade of cedar will be VG hard . Paul said his only concern is the maintenance of the cedar. Any product on the building needs a long life because the school department will not have the money for maintenance. Phil suggested they could back prime the cedar. Paul asked SMMA to explore the cedar and any potential products to extend it's life- coating or back priming . The Committee would also like to see a sample of the composition board in the color SMMA would be recommending . Gym Dividing Wall . Phil explained the State has "suggested" the wall come down between the 2 gyms. They will not fund the auxiliary gym with the wall . They are proceeding with that. He wants to explore possibilities of how those gyms could now be used - seating , basketball courts , etc. He presented a sketch of the original layout and another possibility. To use the space in it's entirety, to use the full volume of space he suggests centering the bleachers and one basketball court. There will still be 3 courts, using a hierarchy of paint on the floors. Bill said the State won ' t accept the wall but did accept the gym, that doesn 't make sense . Phil said he can ' t speak for them but thinks a rigid wall applies that you could use the gym during the school day for community use. Merry Sue does not see a benefit to moving the bleachers to the middle, unless the space is so tight under the basketball courts. Without the change, you could have another activity going on . Janice said it now seems more like a field house. Without permanent bleachers you could have an indoor track. Phil said you can' t have a track because of the wood floor and it does not have the dimensions for that. He believes the new arrangement gives more flexibility for use and seating . Merry Sue suggested showing it to Gus Fredricks and Dr. DeMoura first. 8
