Elias said he fully supports the Committee ' s motion and would be glad to
help but thinks the engineering firm under contract should be fully
utilized .
The Committee thanked Elias for his initiative .
FURNISHING SUBCOMMITTEE - Merry Sue, Janice and Dr. DeMoura
Merry Sue explained the subcommittee has met several times to brainstorm on
what items a traditional classroom should have . They prepared an even
larger list of questions for the architects .
The architects did provide them with a larger scale plan of all the spaces .
The subcommittee has decided there are a series of areas that they don ' t
know enough about and need direction from the Committee on how to proceed ,
i . e . hiring consultants.
The Committee agreed to ask SMMA to do a rendering of a typical classroom
to help the subcommittee with their work .
The Committee would like low storage in each classroom for books .
Teacher ' s closets are included in the design .
They would like one wall to have a counter or tables for the computers .
Dr. DeMoura noted that after the computer counter , each classroom is 728 sq
feet, which is not too big .
He also noted that after reviewing the larger scale plan there are some
design issues to talk to the architects about, some things that are not in
the right place i .e . storage is not near the loading dock .
The specialty areas where the subcommittee will need some consulting are :
science , music/band room, visual arts , business lab, fashion/nutrition ,
family living , educational technology , graphics/woodworking .
Peter asked if they had a good idea of how far they could go themselves and
how much assistance they will need?
Merry Sue said they do.
They can discuss that with Paul and he can formulate a proposal for
consulting work with Tavares .
Paul will speak with Tavares and find out how much it will cost and also
ask him to prove to the Committee he can provide the best services in those
areas .
Dr . DeMoura mentioned the American Association of School Administrators
conference will be held in February 1995 in New Orleans. It is the
foremost collection of school equipment and furniture .
The Committee agreed it would be beneficial for the subcommittee members to
attend.
** Paul made a motion to ask the Selectmen if 3 furnishing
subcommittee members can go to the American Association of School
Administrators conference in New Orleans from Feb . 9-14 , 1995 to
evaluate furniture and equipment for the high school and reimburse
their expenses from the high school account. Joe seconded the
5
