DESIGN PROGRESS
Ed Frenett.e stated they have developed several designs , to date ,
and gotten feedback . Two weeks ago they got the message the
Committee wanted more things explored . Today they have come back
with more materials . After they reach agreement with the
Committee , they will develop the materials boards for the next
meeting . They hope to reach closure on design development in the
next 2 weeks with the progress from today ' s meeting .
He added it is clear the furniture plan and the contract document
plan will proceed on 2 different schedules . SMMA cannot get
enough furniture information , the subcommittee will need input
from SMMA. That process will not be done in 2 weeks .
Ray said today they are prepared to make a recommendation on
materials and presented 2 material schemes :
a. all brick building
b. block and siding of wood or vinyl .
Committee reviewed design changes :
Because the core academic areas are the most public , they get the
gabled roof . Developed off of that spine , is the
library/administration area and the 2 academic wings . The scale
of the administration/ library has been downplayed .
The looked at using 2 different kinds of windows to break up
repetition .
Ed said they are recommending the brick . They did a test in
their office on what is Cape Cod . The people who live here
thought it was the brick , the people who visit, thought it was the
wood and block .
Bill said he thought the cafeteria area stands out, doesn ' t fit
in .
Ed said they is what they want it to do, that is the intent , for
it to stand out.
Joe asked if they are trying to get a New England feel ?
Ed said they are . while some people feel grey is Cape Cod others
think brick reads Cape Cod in a different way .
Joe said the cafeteria seems out of touch .
Janice disagrees.
Ed said they are trying to achieve contrast .
Ray explained the building is being designed also for the
interior space . The interior is at least as important . The
canopy over the cafeteria provides a sunscreen and weather
protection .
Ed added the majority of public will enter in the evening hours .
The cafeteria is open and inviting and will glow in the evening .
Materials :
3
