David Adler, principal in the firm, lives part time in Falmouth and would make a recommendation to the Committee at a cost of $1 , 500 . Ed said as the architects , of course he wants the Committee to take their recommendation . There will also be peer review with Chartwell . Paul said he spoke with David Adler and explained the situation . His firm is the leader in roof design . He always recommends a client choose what they like architecturally . In his experience , when they look at problem roofs the find as many problems with sloped roofs as flat , especially on Cape Cod . On the Cape there is a major problem with wind , rain and ice . On a sloped roof he would recommend a high grade shingle or metal . Flat roofs , when done correctly should be no problem. Ed received the same report . Mr . Adler recommends using single ply membrane and mechanical fasteners . In their experience flat roofs outlast sloped roofs . Technically competent roofs are achieved through peer review and observation during construction . Ed said they will come back with a recommendat-lon that wi11 include sloped and "flat'' roofs . Most of the problems with roofs have to do with the application . Bill asked if wind and ice are a problem, shouldn ' t metal eliminate that? Ed said it depends . Everything wears out eventually . Peter asked about the cost of flat vs . slopec . Ed said their analysis shows no cost difference between flat vs . sloped on the roofs they ' ve been showing as sloped . There is an enormous cost difference on an area frori the front of the gym to the back of the locker room - a very long spar . For the other areas - academic wing - there is virtually no difference. They will continue to explore flat vs , sloped roofs and will coma up with a recommendation that gives the space you want on the inside , the look you want on the outside , and done within the cost parameters . Dr . DeMoura said he would like the Committee to tell the architect to go back and do sloped roofs . It all sounds fine , technically there should be no problems but reality and experience tells us flat roofs leak - regardless of the reason . He takes issue with Ed ' s statement that pitched roofs leak as much as flat . That was Mr . .Adler ' s statement. Paul said he uses Mr . Adler ' s firm a lot . He asked him what he thought and he sees as many problems , different seasonal problems , with each . Ed said they have the liability for this project . If the Committee tells them to do something other than their recommendation , then the Committee should assume the liability . Dr . DeMoura said the opposite should then be true , SMMA can take the responsibility for what leaks . Paul suggested asking for an extended warranty on the roofs . He noted that Mr .
