panelling design , to harmonize with the masonry. Wood has a lot "warmer
more endearing feeling" to the space . Wood has less maintenance then sheet
rock. He said it is not a bad design the way it is but everyone will
appreciate the wood .
- Blinds , presently 50% of the classrooms have blinds . Blinds are not as
effective as blackout shades but last longer and look better.
- Operable wall in alternative education room: originally it was divisible
into 3 smaller spaces . Merry Sue noted they would be 3 very small spaces .
Everyone agreed, divisible into two spaces is sufficient .
- seat cushions in auditorium. Ed said the wood seats are acceptable but
again, everyone will appreciate the cushions . Life of cushions is 15-20
years .
Steve said the ambiance of a building has a lot to do with they way people
will treat it . If it looks institutional they will treat it that way. If
you offer the kids the right atmosphere , then the building does not have to
be made vandal proof.
- operable wall between auxiliary and main gym.
Paul thinks Jim Anderson was adamant that he didn' t want any wall .
' Dr. DeMoura thinks it would have to be approved .
( Paul suggested tabling that discussion until after a meeting Paul and Dr.
' DeMoura have with Jim Anderson.
The Committee agreed the footing between the two gyms should be added.
Motion sensor switches . Presently, in the contract , they have a lighting
' control panel which is programmable .
Peter said a smart panel will turn the lights off at a certain time , but
with motion switches , if there is not motion, they will automatically turn
off? Correct .
, Steve said switching lights on and off often will shorten their lives more
than leaving them on.
iPaul said of the schools recently built that they visited, more than 50%
put in the sensors .
Paul will talk with an electrical engineer and suggested tabling the
discussion until then. He said the energy savings is dramatic .
Dr. Demoura asked what happens in a classroom with a teacher working
quietly at their desk?
Joel said the new models combine motion and infra red detectors . He said
this is a big building for people to walk around turning off lights .
- dual-fuel . Joel said this would require going back to MEPA/CCC and he
does not know how it will be received by them. Will this addition put the
project into a more strict classification regarding permit modification?
Ed suggested the Committee could give a contingent approval depending on
how difficult it will be to get approval , if it is too difficult , they can
abandon it .
Paul does not want to be wishy washy, that will set it up for failure .
BUDGET
Paul reviewed the budget : budgeted amount vs . committed
4
