paperwork and pictures .
Joe asked if he had done a block building before?
Mr . Byrne said he had , block and brick veneer.
Paul asked about as built drawings , is he in favor of contractors keeping
up with their submission?
Mr. Byrne said he is holding money now in Yarmouth for that reason .
He said a clerk is not the person to be pushing the job. He will not give
direction to the general contractor . A successful job is a team. He has
no problem giving advice but not direction . Any questions would go to the
contractor , or technical questions to the architect.
Paul asked him about job meetings?
Mr. Byrne said on his current job they have weekly job meetings. In this
project, Chartwell will have manpower on the job as well as the architect.
Paul said Chartwell will have manpower as part of the project but not as
part of the clerk job.
Ed said it would be helpful for everyone if the clerk knows how the project
is proceeding and anticipates any arising problems . He asked Mr . Byrne his
strategy to get out in front of problems. Many times it is only a problem
once it is built, but won ' t be a problem if it is anticipated .
Mr. Byrne said as he really gets into the plans you start to spot things .
As he reviews the shop drawings and submittals, he thinks ahead. He has to
be very organized to function .
Mr. Byrne said the Committee is welcome to come by the school he is working
on, it is a good chance to review their network and see some things they
wish they had done differently .
Ed asked him where he saw his responsibility for policing people working
with unapproved documents , which is a big problem, about 80% of subs work
with unapproved documents.
Mr. Byrne said in his opinion they do the work at their own risk . He would
notify the architect.
Mr. Byrne asked the Committee' s timetable for making a decision? Paul said
they will decide by next Monday .
Bill DiBartolomeo. He explained he is currently working on the Cambridge
elementary school , a $10 million project. Contaminated soil was found
which delayed the project. Prior to that he worked on the Joselin Diabetes
building , a $27 million addition , adding 3 floors to the existing building .
He worked on a Wellesley College addition including labs, auditorium,
classrooms, a $30 million project. The Harvard Business school athletic
facility , a new $30 million building .
Paul asked him his background, before he was a clerk?
He said he was a resident engineer at a power plant. His mechanical
experience is solid.
Paul asked about the Cambridge School ?
Bill said it is an elementary school , 4 stories , designed by HMFH .
5
