SECTION V PROGRAMS SECOND STEP/POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION SUPPORT The School's behavior programs are Second Step and PBIS. All children and staff are trained and encouraged to use this three-leveled Second Step program with common language and process in the school building or on the playground. The first level is empathy (training on feelings); the second level is problem-solving; the third level is anger management. All children in preschool through grade two are exposed to this program. There is also a home component which would make behavior management consistent between home and school. PBIS provides intervention support for children needing such. Parents/guardians are encouraged to participate in a parent education evening to learn about these programs. This evening is usually held in October of the school year. ASSEMBLIES Assemblies are held throughout the school year and provide opportunities for education, entertainment, and enrichment. Courteous attention is expected at assemblies. Student assemblies are held, when possible, during school hours. Limited seating arrangements sometimes make it impossible to offer open invitations to the general public. THE ARTS During the course of the week, the children attend five specials classes—one per day. Our Arts Program consists of art, physical education, integrated arts, science and library. Specialists may integrate classroom curriculum into the arts or may work at times on thematic strands. CAFETERIA Breakfast and hot and cold lunch programs are offered daily. The programs are set up to provide every student with a nutritionally balanced meal during regularly scheduled eating periods. Menus are published monthly so that students may plan their daily breakfast and lunch with the parent/guardian. At this age level, there is one or two menu choices per day. Participation in the breakfast and lunch programs is encouraged. The government-sponsored free and reduced breakfast and lunch and milk programs are operating in Mashpee. Application forms will be made available in the fall. Questions about these programs should be directed to the Food Service Director, 508-539-3600, ext. 1593. For those students buying lunch, it may be purchased by the week with cash or check,or you may pay on a daily basis. If paying by check, it should be made out to "Town of Mashpee School Lunch", not to the teacher's name. Children are not allowed to charge lunches. If a child does not have lunch money, something will be provided for him/her for lunch that day which is an alternative to the menu. If you are brown bagging your child's lunch, his/her lunch box should contain food items he/she can open himself/herself, e.g., no lids requiring can openers or metal flip tops; go-gurts not recommended as children cannot open them, etc. Mashpee Food Service Department follows the district's Wellness Policy. 46
