•
11
I[J
Board of Appeals Minutes -September 13, 1989 Page 4.
Represented by Bernard Kelly. He stated that he had moved
to Mashpee from Falmouth in June and was advised to get a permit
to work out of his home.
,Cheryl Hawver read correspondence from the Board of Health.
They :are concerned about possible contamination of ground crater with
heavy metalized disposable waste from heavy grinding, polishing
and other activities associated with jewelry manufacturing. Gold
and silver are classified as highly toxic and have a very high
pollution potential. Chemical reclaim devices should be required
in. all drains and appropriate cleaning equipment maintained on
site. Periodic sampling of the waste water should be disposed
of.appropriatley.
Mr. Kelly stated he could understand that in manufacturing but
what he does really isn't that much manufacturing. He makes
approximately 6 or 7 pieces a month. The amount of metal or any
any chemicals are so minimal.
Cheryl Hawver stated that they are concerned because he is
in the groundwater protection area, possible well site for the town.
She suggested sitting down with the Board of Health and discussing
it with them.
Board of Appeals questioned if he intended to have retail
operations out of his home as far as putting a sign out, soliciting
customers.
Mr. Kelly does have a small sign out. He has customers by
appointment only. He has been known for 25 years.
Ms. Hawver read a memo from abutters Natalie Freeman and
Ann Gillis which they sent to register objection to any or all
commercial development in this area. Mr. Kellys' application
states he will conduct business by appointment only; it is
doubtful that the public can be so controlled. Great Neck Road
south is a very heavily traveled through area.
Mr. Makunas questioned the locations of hts studio before he moved
to Mashpee in May.
Prior to Mashpee he was located at the Falmouth Artist Guild,
Main Street, prior to that he was at 29 Depot Ave, prior to that
he was at Route 28 and Route 130 in Barnstable.
Mr. Makunas made a motion
Cheryl Hawver seconded.
All agreed.
to take under advisement.
