t
.Fire Station Building Committee
Minutes
July 2 , 2000
The Wallace Floyd Desigp Grou Ammann &Whitncy: (continued)
For the record, the Fire Station Building Committee indicated that they
would notify the professional liability carrier, and seek claims for the
burden of additional project costs. The mistake was clearly made.
Discussion followed with respect to the safety aspect and related code
requirements of the building using prefabricated truss and conventional
framing. The architect stated that either option will not effect the design
of the building.
It was noted that trusses are more economical, and are less costly.. with a
truss configuration, the attic space would cut into smaller sections. The
truss is also designed to hold a particular load, while conventional framing
provides more allowance for storage. it is not mathematically designed to
the margin as a truss system.
The Architect stated that the conventional framing required in the design
provides allowance for additional storage. The trusses have less code
requirements. It was noted that truss performance specifications can be
designed to have the sane loading as conventional framing.
The Fire Station Building Committee indicated that it is not their desire to
have a change in the design. They denied the suggestion of the engineer
to design for additional storage and increased loading slaeeifications_
The Architect stated that the conventional framing will be re-designed and
that Amm.ann & Whitney will design criteria for the fabricator of the truss
solutions. It is the correct and normal procedure for a truss manufacturer
to design truss solutions informed the Principal Architect noting that all
requirements for the conventional method will be detailed. He stated that
he does not believe there will be an impact on construction.
When asked if there are other natters with mechanical issues such as
HVAC, the Architect stated that he will make sure it is coordinated, but he
assured the Committee that it is basic open space_ There is coordination,
but it is minimal. Mr. Bertaux stated that the ceiling in the crew quarters
is 4-5' below the j'oist'. and the apparatus bay is directly below the joist.
