In May the Children's
Room witnessed the life cycle of butterflies from caterpillars to chrysalis and finally emerging as
butterflies. It was a fascinating month-long project enjoyed by both children and adults. When
the butterflies were ready to be released we held a "party' with stories, crafts and popsicles.
The Friends purchased a butterfly bush for the Story Garden with the hope that our butterflies
will return. The attendance for this event was 48.
We spent the month of June gearing up for the 2011 Collaborative Summer Library Program,
planning story times and preparing craft activities. This is the first year that Massachusetts is
participating in the nationwide program and the theme this year is "One World, Many Stories'.
Flyers were distributed to all of the students in grades K through 6 with the help of Diane
Kingsley, School Librarian. Children can register to participate in the library and will receive a
paper log, or they can register online. The online component also offers a summer reading
program for teens and adults. As of July 1st, there are 142 children registered for paper logs.
The online program has 29 children, 3 teens and 2 adults registered. We have summer reading
program t-shirts decorating the children's department and the t-shirts are for sale. They were
purchased by the Friends at $4.00 each and we are, selling them for$8.00. We have a weekly
trivia contest with small themed prizes.
The first event of the summer was Baby Farm Animals on June 25th. Twenty-five baby farm
animals were brought to the library for children to hold and cuddle. The kittens, bunnies and
chicks were each wrapped in a receiving blanket—it was too cute! The pigs and the goats were
in small pens that the children could climb into. This was a registered program and we offered
5 sessions. All sessions were full and we had a wait list. There were 275 participants.
