i
' J
Library.
The Library has also committed to plant a tree on the grounds to co=emorate the late
Anton Buschenfeldt. Catherine indicated that she did-not have a problem with planting
trees; however, she requested that the Trustees commit to develop a landscape plan in
conjunction with the DPW and landscape personnel ftom'Mashppe Commons, which
ill then be followed as donations occur. The area adjacent to the driveway belongs to
Mashpee Commons, which has plans to one day install sidewalks.s. -Diana Smith's
memorial tree and daffodils planted by the Girl.Scouts have already been planted in.this
area, and should be moved to another loc .tion on the grounds. Future plantings can
adhere to the landscape plan and should avoid-any conflicts with development plans.
. The sclpture placed outside the Children's Garden needs attention. The sculpture was
installed by the artist in cooperation with the Library Trustees, but without consulting the
DPW for assistance. There are some concerns about its proper care and maintenance.
The sculpture itself, which is white, is covered with a moldy green substance. Is it
possible to-contact the artist to determine what type of cleaning products might be used
on it that would-not discolor it` After determining the appropriate cleaning solution, who
will be responsible for upkeep? In addition, because the sculpture was installed without a
concrete base, weeds and grass sprout up freer inside the structure and'are very difficult
for the DPW staff`to contain. The bonders of brigs that encircle the sculpture are
mismatched and unattractive. Catherine and I discussed the possibility ofre-installing the
sculpture with a proper'conerete base and replacing the briefs with professional gality
brigs. f recommend that we accept this offer and cover the costs of any decorative
brigs, materials, or accessories purchased to correct the problem and restore the
sculpture. A maintenance schedule and/or responsibility for cleaning the sculpture
should also be determined.
. Dates for carpet cleaning and window washing vete also discussed, along with various
other building questions.
Gus Frederickson, Director of the Recreation tion I ep rtment for the town of Mashpee has
requested that the Trustees 6onsider a request to close the Library on Saturday, October 6,
the day of the annual Oktoberfst celebration. The roads around the Library are generally
closed to cars to facilitate the annual road race. Traditionally the Trustees have voted to
honor this request, and staff members who are scheduled to work have the option of
reporting to work, although the building would be closed to the public, or using a
vacation day. I would like to request that the Trustees vote on this request and allow me
to report back to Mr. Frederickson.
