IP
with questions, and we are gathering information to incorporate into the plan.
• The Library has received a number of requests from families who hone school
their children'to use the facilities' meeting or program rooms. In each case the
circumstances are slightly different, but the number of requests has underscored
the need for clarification on meeting room use policy, as well as a- olic r on use
of the building by tutors.
In one-instance, we have received a request to reserve the Conference Room
every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00-3:00 p.m. for the duration of the school
year. A group of about six families have pooled their resources rel hired a tutor
to facilitate thein hone-schooling efforts, and they would like to use the
Conference Room as the common location to serve as a classroom. I met with
several of the mothers and to explain why I did not feel that I could grant their
request at this time. They were disappointed, and I said I would discuss it further
with the Trustees.
Although we do not currently have a tutoring policy in place, many libraries have
created policies to deal l with this type of scenario. I would lite the Library to
support the homeschooling community, but I have several concerns with
granting this type of request. Using the library for education and instruction is
clearly a benefit to the community; however,.this scenario definitely represents
commercial venture. The tutor is being paid by the families for her services and
the Library would be providing a venue for these services to be delivered. In
addition, the frequency of the requests is a concern. To allow one group to boob
the Conference Room two afternoons a week for the entire year would restrict
access to that room for many worthy, noxi-profit groups.
However, the Library is aware that tutoring sessions do take place in the building
throughout the year. Some tutors wort at tables in the Young.Adult Room with
students, while others will reserve a small study roomy on the second floor. It's
possible that not all of these sessions involve a fee. In these cases it is generally an
individual student and tutor meeting one on one.
In the case of the study rooms, reservations are accepted only two weeks in
