26
It may seem that I am reporting mostly on truck repairs,
but our trucks are gradually going down grade for the lack
of repairs due to insufficient funds for maintenance. I must
ask, what good is a fire truck with leaking pumps and no
transmissions?
Last but not least, the fire chief who answers your calls
24 hours a day with very little consideration for time off,
needs a boost. I appreciated the residents voting me a raise
last year, but I didn't get it; so I'm asking again this year
for a raise. I believe that I have given dependable service
at all times, but men wear out the same as machines.
i' Nearly all other towns have a different situation than
in Mashpee. Usually a town is centralized with sufficient men
employed or residing nearby so that a red net work is efficient
and it is not necessary for any one person to be on continuous +'
duty.
In the year 1961 there was $1,000 for relief firemen, half
of which was used for town business, the remainder left for my
time off which amounted to about 344 hours for the year, less
` than 1 hour a day if figured daily. I have my idea whether it is
fair or not. I would like to hear what the voters think of
the situation and just what action will be taken. I have
served you faithfully for it years but can not continue under
the present conditions.
Respectfully submitted,
ELLSWORTH PETERS, +'
`i Fire Chief
