97 <br />six inches thick, and a three inch profection on either side of the wall. <br />(b) Under foundations of one and a half and not more than two story <br />buildings, eight inches thick, and four inch projections on either side of <br />the wall. (c) Under a twelve inch thick wall, eight inches thick. (e) All <br />chimneys must extend to solid ground and have footings which project <br />at least six inches on all sides and are at least eight inches thick. (f) All <br />footings shall be of such width and thickness as to safely resist the <br />superimposed load without exceeding at any point the allowable bearing <br />capacity of the soil. <br />Para. 5. Foundations. 1. All foundations shall be of such width <br />and thickness as to safely resist the superimposed load without exceeding <br />the allowable working strength, and can be of concrete, brick or stone. <br />Minimum requirements shall be as follows: (a) Six inch thickness for <br />poured concrete supporting one story wood frame structure without <br />basement. (b) Eight inch thickness for all other poured walls. (c) Eight <br />inch thickness for all masonry unit walls that extend up to eight feet <br />below finished grade. Maximum total height of foundation wall sup- <br />ported to be not more than thirty feet to eaves and thirty-five feet to <br />ridge. (d) Twelve inch thickness for all masonry unit walls that extend <br />more than eight feet below outside finish grade. <br />One story frame buildings may be built on cement piers provided <br />that the distance between piers is within the limits of the maximum spans <br />for wood girders. <br />Para. 6. Piers for Girders. 1. First floor girders must rest on solid <br />masonry or cement filled steel columns. 2. On block foundations, cells <br />of blocks below girder must be filled with cement to form solid bear- <br />ing, or 3. Masonry pilasters not less than four inches by eight inches <br />shall be built to receive girder ends, or cement filled steel columns may <br />be used. <br />Para. 7. All areas under buildings must be accessible with a mini- <br />mum clearance of 20 inches and be ventilated in two exterior walls. <br />Para. 8. No wooden structural member shall be closer than one <br />inch to the chimney, and whenever wooden forms or supports are used <br />in the construction of chimneys or fireplaces, they shall be removed <br />within two weeks after masonry is laid. <br />Para. 9. Sizing and spacing of girders shall be in accordance with <br />Tables I, II, III, and IV appended. <br />Para. 10. Wood floor joists. 1. Where joists frame into side of wood <br />girders, metal hangers or a bearing strip spiked to the girder must be <br />used. 2. Floor joists framed into masonry walls shall have at least a four <br />inch bearing and a three inch fire or bevel cut. 3. Floor joists shall be <br />doubled under all partitions running parallel to the floor joists. 4. All <br />headers over four feet long shall be doubled. 5. Floor joists shall be cross <br />bridged when span exceeds eight feet. At least one by three inch or <br />stronger stock shall be used. <br />Para. 11. Wood Rafters. 1. Truss construction may be used provided <br />it is of a strength comparable with Table IV and is approved by the <br />Building Inspector. 2. Collar ties not less than 2x4 or 1x6 inches shall <br />be used for all sloping rafters. <br />Para. 12. Exterior wall studs. 1. Studs shall not be less than two <br />inches by four inches placed not more than sixteen inches on center. 2. <br />Headers over all openings shall be doubled and shall be at least the <br />following: (a) up to 3'-2 2x4's (b) 3' to 51/2'-2 2x6's on edge. (c) 51/2' to <br />T-2 2x8's on edge. (d) over T-2 2x10's on edge. 3. In lieu of headers, <br />approved trusses may be used. 4. Studs in exterior frame walls may run <br />from sill to roof line provided they do not exceed twenty feet in length. <br />
