71 <br />Para. 3. Excavation. . L All . excavations shall extend - to <br />solid ground. 2. All excavations shall extend at least 18" <br />below the finished grade. <br />Para. 4. Footings. 1. All footings must be masonry. 2. <br />Minimum footings shall be as follows: (a) Under foundations <br />of one story buildings, six inches thick, and a three inch pro- <br />jection- on either side of the wall. (b) Under foundations of <br />one and a half and not more than two story buildings, <br />,eight inches thick, and four inch projection , on either side <br />of the wall. (c) Under a twelve inch thick wall, eight inches <br />thick. (e) All chimneys, must extend to solid .ground and <br />have footings which project at least six inches on all sides <br />and are at least eight inches thick. (f) All footings shall be <br />of such width and thickness as to safely resist the super- <br />imposed load without exceeding at any point the allowable <br />bearing -capacity of the soil. <br />Para. 8. Foundations. 1. All foundations shall be of <br />such width and thickness as to safely resist the superimposed <br />load without exceeding the allowable working strength, and <br />can be of concrete,' brick or stone. Minimum requirements <br />shall be as follows: (a) six inch thickness for poured . con- <br />crete supporting, one story wood frame structure without <br />basement. (b) Eight inch thickness for all other poured walls. <br />(c) Eight inch thickness for..all masonry unit walls that ex- <br />tend up to eight feet below finished grade. Maximum total <br />height of, foundation wall supported to be not more than <br />thirty feet to eaves and thirty-five feet to ridge. (d) twelve <br />inch thickness for all masonry unit walls that extend more <br />than eight feet below outside finish grade. <br />One story frame ..buildings may be built on cement piers <br />provided that the ;distance between piers is within the limits <br />of the maximum spans for wood girders. <br />Para. 6. Piers for Girders. 1. First floor girders must <br />rest on solid masonry or cement filled steel columns. 2. On <br />block foundations, cells of blocks below girder must be filled <br />with cement to form solid bearing, or 3. Masonry pilasters <br />riot less than four inches by eight inches shall be built to <br />receive girder ends, or cement filled steel columns may be <br />Used. <br />Fara. 7. All areas under buildings must be accessible with <br />a minimum clearance of 20 inches and be ventilated in , two <br />exterior walls., <br />Para. 8. No wooden structural member shall be . closer <br />than one inch to the chimney, and whenever wooden forms <br />
