98
Report of the School Principal
To: Mr. Clayton E. Campbell. Superintendent
of Schools, School Committee and Citizens
of the Town of Mashpee
The annual report of the Samuel G. Davis School is here-
with submitted from the Principal.
From year to year I have commented on various aspects
of pupil growth. This year we have been concerned with the
improvement of reading in the middle grades.
By the time children reach the fourth grade in most
schools a teacher has children whose reading ability ranges
from second grade level to as high as the eighth. Thus the
teacher is faced with the problem of administering instruc-
tion to a widely diversified group.
To improve the reading in the middle grades of our
school, we have initiated the following program.
1. Our intermediate grades are using a departmental
plan for the teaching of reading.
2. We believe that each child must be given reading in-
struction at the level where he can read with success.
3. We do not assume that a child in the fifth grade can
necessarily read at the fifth grade level. He may read
below or above that level.
4. Each pupil is tested to determine his reading level.
5. Starting with the fourth grade, our intermediate
grades, (4-6) all have reading at the same time. This
period is forty-five minutes in length and all pupils
regardless of grade pass to their assigned levels of in-
struction.
6. In grouping our pupils, careful attention is given to
factors besides reading ability. In certain casesit
might be unwise to place an older child with a young
group or a young child with an older group.
7. At the end of each month, teachers meet and discuss
whether certain pupils should be regrouped.
