59
Report of the Centennial Committee
P
s To the People of the Town of Mashpee:
r
n I wish to submit a progress report to the people on the
plans made and executed to date.
s The Centennial Committee became active July 1968, and
discussions were held to determine the ways in which we
could best celebrate our centennial. It was agreed that a pa-
rade was not the solution. In order to have any affair worthy
of being long remembered, it was decided to present to the
public and our townspeople, something commemorating the
life and times of our ancestors and the heritage of the land
known as Mashpee. We took into consideration the fact that
life in Mashpee at one time centered around the original
Town Hall, and the Old Ball Field, thereby establishing the
most logical location for this celebration. The Old Ball Field,
f now commonly known as Attaquin Park, so rich in memories,
z and with natural resources in abundance; it was only natural
to develop this area and make it so interesting that people
will enjoy using it.
P Announcements of our plans to develop the Nature Cen-
ter resulted in a wonderful response from people all over the
state in the Nature field. These people have come to Mashpee
to see the proposed site of our Nature Center and to evaluate
the raw materials on hand for us to use. All agree that we
have great potential here in the Town of Mashpee. It became
e apparent that the 9.9 acres of land in the Park was inadequate
for the Nature Center. We were also aware that land abut-
ting the park area, belonging to the Division of Fisheries
and Game, of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, has laid
dormant since 1941 and was ideal for our project. Mr. Cook-
ingham, Assistant Director of this division was approached
with our request to turn the land over to the Town of Mash-
pee for the purpose of utilizing it for natural resource func-
tions. The division readily agreed that this would be advan-
tageous to the State as well as to the Town. This particular
property includes beautiful wood land, a small cranberry bog,
(which we wish to restore for an exhibit) a strip of beach
equal to that presently owned by the town, as well as access
to a beautiful parking area and new road into the area known
