fir. . 60
as Fisherman's Landing. It is possible that we can develop an
impressive entrance to the Nature Center, thereby alleviating
§ the traffic congestion an Lake Avenue. All indications are that
this will be the best choice for the main entrance, as it is
more convenient to walk into theparkfrom this point and
will allow for gradual revelation of displays within the park
and along the trails.
The Job Corpsmen arrived in Mashpee on November 4,
1968 to begin the initial brush clearing for us and opened up
the lower slope of the park high ground. Although they
' worked for us for only two weeks a great deal of progress
was made. A difficult job was accomplished with the added
J help from some of our prominent men and boys in our town:
Fire Chief, Warren Hicks; Police Chief, George G. Bingham,
Jr; Highway Surveyor, Adolphus Miller; Surveyor Assistant
Norman Hendricks, Basil Peters, Robert Faria, Headmaster of
Cape Cod .Preparatory School, and his student body; the
Mashpee Boy Scout Troop; as well as Thomas Saunders; Mr.
& Mrs. Elmer Hendricks and her Legion Auxiliary helpers,
that worked diligently to supply the workers with lunches
and hot drinks.
Although fliers were sent home with all children of
school age, announcing our plans for volunteers to work on
Saturday, November 9th, very few townspeople responded. We
are hopeful that warmer weather will encourage volunteers
to help this spring.
In establishing the center of town as the scene for most
of our centennial celebration, we have considered the neces-
sity of having this area designated as a HISTORIC DISTRICT
' and work toward restoring it as such.
Not only will it become a favorite attraction for tourists,
(such as the historic district in Sandwich) but also the pride
of Mashpee; by preserving the character and reflection of it's
historic past; further, we believe that the townspeople will
truly appreciate the end results and the idea that this is a
diving part of our community life.
It is our desire at the Centennial Committee to present a
noteworthy program during the celebration. Printed folders
will be offered for donations, with brief notes and photos of
yesteryear as well as today. Strip maps will be available to
I show areas of .attractions thruout the Town. All displays
j in the park area will be authentic and will be; made by
