61
n Mashpee PEOPLE, It is our plan to construct two authentic
ig replicas for the MARSHPEE INDIAN VILLAGES, One winter
it village in an appropriate location and the summer village
is in view of the lake. We shall attempt to display household
4 artifacts within the homes of the villages and farm imple-
,k ments in the proper settings. Our nature trails will connect
all displays and will have trailside exhibits of native plant-
4,
ings, all properly labeled.
P We have requested the return of the Job Corpsmen to
,y help us construct other features which we wish to include,
;s such as a rustic foot bridge across the marshland which lies
d between the Mill Pond and the Mashpee Lake. A footpath
approximately 8 feet wide could be layed out so that visitors
i, in the park who wish to see the attractions on Route #130
it could easily walk along the path to the top of Ministers'
,f Hill, thereby alleviating congestion on Lake Avenue, over
e which autos must travel to reach the beach parking facilities.
r. This avenue is obviously inadequate at present.
' Articles have to be included in the Town Meeting War-
s rant to ask the people to vote to purchase the Avant Home-
stead, which we have selected for our first museum, and
f vote to appropriate from available funds money with which
1 to restore this site. If these articles are voted in the affirm-
ative, we must also ask the people to vote as to whether or
s not they wish to fund this as a town owned property, or
request thru application the Federal Government to reim-
burse the town (approximately 5096) under the Historic
t Preservation Act, Public Law 89-665.
P In establishing a historic district, we must make an at-
tempt to include the parsonage in the plans for restoration
and preservation. As you know, this property is owned by
the people of the Town of Mashpee. It is of great importance
that we restore this lovely old building to its original charm,
and whatever else of a historic nature within the boundary
I of our town. It is up to us to evaluate our heritage, and
preserve it now for the future.
Sometime ago the town voted to investigate the possi-
bility of erecting a statue in Mashpee. We feel that this is
an appropriate time to consider erecting one at the Mashpee
Rotary. We hope to present a report on this matter at Town
Meeting. It has been suggested that the subject might be
an Indian, (naturally a Wampanoag) in a pose of welcome.
We believe that this will be quite impressive.
