` C"
i
i
-116
been added to the curriculum of grades 4-6. Once each week Mr.
Edward Heywood, instrumental music supervisor for the towns of
'; Sandwich and Mashpee, gives lessons to those who possess instru-
ments.
Children in grades K-3 are receiving instruction in the Orff
Method of Music under Mrs. Maureen Enos, former director of
music in the town of Lexington, Mass. and at present an instructor
at the Cape Cod Conservatory of Music.
"Orff for Children" is a method of teaching children in groups
a combination of the techniques necessary to make music, co-
ordinating the use of musical instruments, voice, poetry and dance.
Devised by the German composer Carl Orff in the 1940's, this
method has gained increasing acceptance throughout the world.
Volunteers and Para-Professionals
Each year parents, volunteers and para-professionals who have
!' talents contribute their services to the school on a part time basis.
Some help by tutoring on a one to one basis in reading and arith-
metic, others aid by assisting the teacher with clerical and other class-
room chores. Miss Marlene Mihos, a talented young
junior college graduate, who worked for a few months before re-
turning to college helping children in many ways, and to Col.Eugene
jl Clark, historian and marine biologist who each year presents his
slides and lectures on Cape Cod marine life, ecology and the
Eastern Eskimos to our children.
Trends in Education
Occasionally I comment on recent trends in education. Re-
cently the basic concept in teaching is rapidly changing, that of
teaching a group or class.
l For too many years it has been considered necessary that a
teacher work with a group and function within the framework of
four-walled classrooms. There were no practical alternatives. To-
day, innovations-of many types have expanded the capabilities of
ji teachers—instruction is designed to meet the capabilities of learners.
l' Throughout the country new ideas are spreading. One sees or
reads of the Continuous Progress Plan, Contracts, Unipacs, IPI and
other innovations:
t
