117 <br /> All have one thing in common. The traditional form of in- <br /> struction, in which all students were taught the same skills and con- <br /> cepts at the same time, is being abandoned. Instead cooperating <br /> professionals (teachers, administrators, para-professionals) are <br /> creating new environments in which individuals proceed at a self- <br /> determined pace often on self-selected subjects to achieve self- <br /> evaluated and self-satisfying goals. <br /> While no one line summary can, at this time, outline the <br /> rewards of individualized instruction, you may be sure that indi- <br /> vidualized instruction in some form is a certainty, for the individual- <br /> ized system or concept allows each student to work at a level he <br /> can handle and advance as quickly as he can or as slowly as he <br /> must, depending on his ability. <br /> Summer School <br /> During the summer the Title I Project, Remedial Instruction <br /> in Reading and Arithmetic, under the direction of Mr. Robert <br /> Sisson was continued. Forty children received remedial instruction. iL <br /> Highly individualized learning experiences became possible for each <br /> pupil, for we were able to obtain the services of seven teachers and <br /> three teacher aides. Testing results showed an average gain of 6 <br /> months in grade level in arithmetic and between three and five <br /> months in reading. It is our hope to continue the same learning <br /> situation next summer. In the words of the director, "Next year we <br /> hope to focus more attention on the emotional and social develop- <br /> ment of our children. The longer I work with children, the more <br /> convinced I become that the way boys and girls feel about them- <br /> selves is the real key to both learning and achievement." <br /> In closing, I wish to express my appreciation to you, Dr. <br /> D'Antuono, Mr. Clayton E.
