` 10g <br /> 1-9 Design Requiremeints <br /> The design standards presented are based on the type of <br /> ' road design speed, rights of the highway user and abutting <br /> i property owners. <br /> 1. Driveways should be located to the best advantage <br /> with regard to the highway allignment profile, sight distance <br /> conditions, etc. <br /> 2. The standards call for not more than two driveways <br /> for any one property. Additional drives should not be re- <br /> quested unless there is a clear necessity for them. No cir- <br /> cular drives are allowed, unless there is a minimum frontage <br /> of 150'. <br /> 3. The sub-division of a parcel of property by the owner <br /> 5 does not in any way change the number of drives allowed <br /> under the standards. If there are a number of commercial <br /> establishments to be constructed by the applicant to connect <br /> with the exit and entrance allowed under the existing stand- <br /> ards. <br /> 4. The standards, for commercial drives, on roads having <br /> a design speed or an 85-percentile speed of 30L mph or less <br /> may have two 45 drives with a minimum radius of 30 feet <br /> �. and a minimum square width of 20 feet. If the major use of <br /> 'Y the drive is for trucks, the width may be increased to maxi- <br />} mum of 24 feet (Fig. 1-1) , <br />' 5. On roads having a higher assumed design speed than <br /> 30 mph the radius may be increased to a 50, foot maximum <br /> c where site conditions permit with a maximum square width <br /> of 24 feet (Fig. 1-2) <br />}, 6. In the case of a short frontage, where is would be im- <br /> possible to construct two 45 drives and a dividing island, or <br /> ' where warranted by other site conditions, a single 900 drive- <br />` way 24 feet wide measured at the point of tangency to the <br /> 1 i drive, and two foot radii may be used. (Fig. 1-3) <br /> 1 7. In the case of an entrance to a high volume traffic <br /> generator such as a drive-in theater or shopping plaza, chan- <br /> t, nelizing island shall be constructed in the throat of a 900 <br /> drive. The drives on each side of the central island shall be <br /> a minimum 24 foot width measured at the point of tangency <br /> to the drive, with a maximum radius of '50 feet (Unusually <br /> ij large traffic generators may require special design). The lo- <br /> cation of the traffic island is to be determined by control <br /> radii not less than 40 feet but preferably 50,feet as illustrated <br /> in Figure 1-4.
