ANNUAL REPORT OF THE PARK& RECREATION DEPARTMENT
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen
and Citizens of the Town of Mashpee:
Probably the most important development ever from this department has been
the opening of the Recreation Center in February, 1976. The building is open
10 hours a day, 7 days a week, and provides more than just a place to go. In
n, addition to the pool table, air hockey, ping pong, TV, and all the various games,
the Center is being used for meetings of a number of organizations, and for
slimnastics. This list of thank you's is endless; but for all those that gave of
themselves to help complete this project, one has to only look at the happenings
within the building to receive the thanks you all so deserve.
The Summer months continue to be the busiest. Under the new sticker pro-
gram, receipts totalled$3,553.00; an increase of 501/o from the previous year.
Our lifeguards (Jean Naegelin, James Mueller, Vicki Gifford, Gary Hicks, and i..
Dorothy Princi)have done another excellent job in safeguarding and maintaining
our beaches. Swimming lessons were continued on a twice a week basis, and
were as successful as in the past.
Mashpee Youth Baseball is no longer such; we are now a chartered member
of Little League, Inc., fielding 4 fully equipped, well-coached teams. Sequoia
Insurance was this year's champion, with only two losses for the year.
I
Our Babe Ruth entry established itself as the team to beat in future years.
Every game was an exciting contest, and through the coaching of John Warren, the
players developed new skills and competed on an equal scale with the best. Nat-
ional recognition has been given to Adam Jonas & Guy Green for their contribu-
tions.
This department now sponsors two softball teams in the Barnstable Amateur
Softball League. The Wampettes finished a strong second, with the men showing
signs of challenging the league leaders next year.
There is not an open afternoon or night that the Town Hall isn't being used
for some recreational activity during the Winter. The basketball program has
expanded to include boys and girls from ages 6 thru 16, with an adult basketball
program twice a week. Our youth have been capably coached by George Green,
Jr., Richard Oakley, Marion Joseph, and Maryanne Miller. Volleyball con-
tinues as a popular activity for both men and women; and for a first year,
Mr. Bengtt Carlsson had fine results working with soccer.
Special events of the year included the 1-0 victory of the Fire Dept. over the
Little League Coaches& Directors in a Donkey Baseball Game, the annual
Easter Egg Hunt& Police vs. Firemen Hoola Hoop and Frisbee Throwing Con-
test, and the Pass, Punt and Kick Competition. ;
In addition to the Recreation Center, there was constructed a regulation i )
Little League Field and an outdoor basketball court. These are vitally neces-
sary in providing alternatives for as many as possible during the Summer months.
The basketball court in the Town Hall was completely refinished under the super-
vision of Larry Dove. It is hoped that in the near future we can expand ever
further to build two badly needed tennis courts.
It has been a most successful, productive year, and we would like to thank
everyone in the Town of Mashpee for their cooperation, participation and sup-
port of all our endeavors.
Respectfully submitted,
Jerry L. DePalma, Director
Larry E. Dove, George F. Green,Jr., Richard Oakley
93
