33
Report of the Park Commissioners
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen and
the Citizens of the Town of Mashpee
The parking area at Attaquin Park was extended 140 x 35
feet, graded, trees and debris removed. We were fortunate to
receive a bid low enough to complete this project and enable
us to have the complete parking area oiled. This helped to
keep the dust down and gave the parking area a temporary
hardened surface.
We added one hundred yards of beach sand to the exist-
Ing beach. More work was completed in clearing brush and
fallen trees. We are hampered 'in this development by the
late approval of the town budget each year, by the first of
May there is danger of burning brush and able workers are
not available. We suggest clearing of this land would be a
good project for the Selectmen to instigate as a means of
aiding the needy during the winter months.
At this time we feel the parking area is ample for most
occasions. Our problem as supervision during the week and
early evenings. We are grateful to those who use the beaches
in that they have attempted to keep it clean and attractive.
From the fine comments we have received on the pro-
gress of our work, we feel that many citizens are interested
in restricting the weekend crowds to residents and their
guests. This could be done with hardship to many who drive
many miles to enjoy picnic spots in our town. In an attempt
to help, the commissioners voted to raise the parking fee on
all holidays to $1.00. hoping it will force some transients to
use other beaches.
There has been too much "social drinking" on the beach-
es and wrath the cooperation of the police department it is
our desire to curb this thoughtlessness on the part of a few.
