Mr. Terry stated, "What they are saying, in their own
selfish way is, preserve it for us. we want to have as many
cars, hundreds and thousands -of cars over the years for us" .
While zoning has been frozen, permits have been obtained for
the construction of seven hundred and fifty units. There is more
to the Town of Mashpee than building massive condo units, while
peering across the road and saying, "We like the green space" .
Speaking as the landowner, Mr. Terry stated he was nearer
offered the financial opportunity to use his land for an Assisted
Living space, as was the impression of sine Southport residents.
Mr. Terry stated he has been paying mortgage and taxes on
this land for a period of eighteen years. The land has remained
in its natural state for this period of time.
This project has been referred to the Cape Cod commission by
the Planning Board, approximately $1 million dollars has been
spent in this effort . The entire property is under investigation
for traffic, water, sewerage, lighting, envirornnental, and
archeological conditions; none of which was ever required of the
Southport project (pre-Cape Cod Commission) . This matter remains,
to be currently pending before the Commission.
. Terry asked if this matter is the prime consideration of
the Town given the fact zoning has been suspended for the next
eight years. Due to the massive change -in zoning this Article
would bring about, and which the Planning Board has not discussed
as a body, W. Terry feels should be reviewed by the Planning
Board, Town Planner, and Assistant Town Planner.
Nor`. Terry described this as a "hijacked Article" due to the
fact it was originally written. by the Town Planner. He did
acknowledge the time and effort invested by the Town Planner,
also recognizing his competency. However, due to the tremendous
impact this proposed Article would have on the commercial future
of the Town, it should be reviewed and discussed further.
The intention of the proposed Article is unclear to Mr.
Terry, if in fact the Article is adopted it would not allow an
Assisted Living project.
Addressing the issue of preservation, Mr. Terry explained
that he had previously submitted this parcel of land to the Land
Bank of Mashpee for consideration of Town purchase, as well as
meeting with Southport residents requesting their support in this
matter. The Land Bark denied the purchase, stating the Town was
not interested in this type of a parcel as it does not meet
conservation, grater, and wildlife issues, much to Mr. Terry'
disappointment. There had been no 'support whatsoever from the
Southport residents at that time, despite open invitation and
proper notification.
