16 Great Neck Road North
Ydashpee, -'Massachusetts 02649
Mr. Lehrer wanted to note while going through addressing assessments, the economic development
action plans need attention. A lot of focus was placed on the industrial park and making the EDIC
robust it didn't get into actions to facilitate in economic growth consistent with priorities of the town. It is
his professional opinion the EDIC chapter could have been more robust and less romantic and more
data driven. There was a lot of hopeful ideas, one was develop a pamphlet. We can definitely address
more in the update.
The Chair called for Public Comment and recognized Lynne Barbee.
Lynne Barbee- As a retired union organizer she would be remiss to not suggest doing a survey of
wages for employed verses unemployed. Census data might be different now from pre-COVID and
COVID. In theory people are saying wages have gone up due to cost of living and inflation. It would be
beneficial to go to local businesses and ask if that had an impact on them.
Discussions resumed with the Planning Board.
Ms. Waygan would like a wage analysis for the local workforce.
Ms. Sweet commented there is data available through the American Community Survey on a
continuous basis and we can look at what is there in terms of wage information. They do interim
reviews so you don't have to wait for the census. We will look at what is available.
Ms. Faulkner would like to have a flip chart tutorial on what is workforce. How can they afford to live
here? She is not sure if $1800 a month is reasonable for rent. What they earn gross and they can't
spend more than 30% of gross income and you start looking at that with housing and they can't afford
it. She would love to know How can we build affordable housing and they can afford to live there. We
are saying 43% of our economy is tourism, what percent is made up of people who man the stores and
do the service work we need to keep tourism going.
Ms. Waygan commented we are hearing more not only about affordable housing but also affordable
living. The government wants to cap housing costs of your income to 30%, well what is there a cap for
childcare, food, clothes, gas, and entertainment? Now we are entering what the wage gap is. She did
hear in one community the town would give perks to a business if they brought in high paying jobs. The
CCC used to do an analysis that involved that, she isn't sure if that is in the current RPP. They would
do an analysis on a company coming into a town, they had less mitigation payments if they were
offering high paying jobs. If someone was coming in with low paying jobs it would be a burden on the
community for services like housing.
Cultural Heritage
Ms. Waygan read her comments from April 6thwithout adding any additional. She would like a list of all
the ancient ways in Mashpee. As an index take complete 1998 chapter and put it as an index for new. It
13
